COUNTDOWN: DAYS HRS MINS SECS

John R. Gilson

John Robert Gilson, 92, of Cecil, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 15, 2015, at his home surrounded by his family.

John was born in Shawano on Aug. 5, 1923, the son of the late Earl R. and Gerogianna (Ketter) Gilson. He was united in marriage to Mildred M. Kersten. She preceded John in death.

John served in the United States Army during World War II, including the Battle of the Bulge. John helped to start the first phone company in Shawano, built his own home, and was a cabinet maker and a jack of all trades. He was a member of St. Martin Catholic Church in Cecil, a former member of the Shawano American Legion Post 117, Shawano VFW Post 2723 and the Knights of Columbus.

John was very proud of his Irish heritage. In his free time, he loved fishing and spending time with his family and friends. If you visited his home, he wouldn’t let you leave without eating.

John is survived by his daughter, Mary Jane (Paul White) Hoefs, of Cecil; his son, William R. (Sue) Gilson, of Richfield; one grandchild, Casey Hoefs, of Shawano; one sister, Mary Holtz, of Little Suamico; and special friend, Evelyn Wilke, of Sturgeon Bay.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred; two brothers, Ralph Gilson in infancy and Patrick Gilson; and one brother-in-law, Donald Holtz.

A private family service will be held.

Swedberg Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements.
