As it begins offering services, the new Boys & Girls Club of Shawano has received two significant financial contributions.

The Mielke Family Foundation is donating $60,000 to the club, which is starting services this month for third-, fourth- and fifth-grade students at Olga Brener Intermediate School in Shawano.

CoVantage Credit Union also has donated $36,506 to the club through a fundraising campaign that the credit union promoted to its members and visitors from Nov. 28-Dec. 12. The campaign raised half in private donations, and then CoVantage matched the donations for the other half.

The influx of funding assists the new Boys & Girls Club in getting started following a three-year community planning effort to improve after-school activities for children in the Shawano area.

To affiliate with the Boys & Girls Club, organizers needed to raise funding for one year of operation, plus pledges for another two years, or a total of approximately $300,000.

Organizers have announced plans to begin club operations later this month after a sign-up period for Olga Brener parents to enroll their children at a cost of $10 per year.
