Oreskovic lost the match, 5-2, but was one of two Shawano wrestlers to advance to sectionals.

Shawano senior Austin Oreskovic had a chance at a regional championship Saturday at Green Bay Preble.

The 138-pounder used a pin over Green Bay Preble’s Ethan VandenPlas in the semifinals to advance to the regional title match against Ashwaubenon’s Dawson Dembroski.

Tied heading into the final two minutes, Dembroski (27-15) got Oreskovic (20-11) to his back and scored a nearfall to take the 5-2 victory. Oreskovic finished in third place and advanced to Saturday’s WIAA Division 1 sectional in Kaukauna.

“If we can go down, we’re going to score. That’s a scoring position for us,” Shawano head coach Mike Homan said. “Third period, tied 2-2, we’ll take down 100 percent of the time. It’s just unfortunate. We wrestled real well there but just came up on the short end of it.”

Oreskovic will be joined at state by freshman teammate Ben Carroll, who needed a third-period comeback to secure his spot at 126 pounds.

Carroll trailed 5-0 after the first period and 5-3 after the second period against Bay Port’s Ben Flisakowski (11-14).

With the wrestlers in neutral position to start the final period, Flisakowski added a takedown to pull ahead 7-3 but eased off and let Carroll stand up for the point.

Carroll (18-12) answered with a takedown and nearfall in the final minute to pull ahead 8-7, and then needed to hold on for the final 15 seconds for the victory.

“He really changed his style in the last period of wrestling there, and we’ve been on him all season about it,” Homan said. “If he decides he wants to be a good wrestler, he’s going to be a good wrestler.”

The Hawks entered the tourney with a depleted squad. Jarrett Laatsch suffered an injury early in the season. Crede Timm was out due to a concussion, and Aaron Pyawasay was battling illness.

“Just a real unfortunate set of circumstances to end the year here with,” Homan said.

Wrestling will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at Kaukauna High School. Carroll will face Hortonville’s Jacob Barnett (37-3), the top finisher in the Kaukauna regional last weekend, in the quarterfinals. Oreskovic will face Appleton North’s Ian Laatsch (36-5) in the quarterfinals.

The top two wrestlers of the eight-person brackets at each weight class advance to state.

“It’ll definitely help Ben as he sets up the final three years to see what sectionals is like, to see where we want to be, obviously in a sectional final someday,” Homan said. “And for Austin, he has life yet. He has a chance to go and improve and get where he wants to be. His goals are still in front of him.”
