Senior Braxten Surber led Shawano yet again with a 41 as the Hawks finished fourth at Thursday’s Bay Conference meet in Winneconne.

New London won the meet by shooting a 162, West De Pere tallied a 163 and Xavier took third with a 167. Shawano posted a 174, and Menasha was fifth with a 182.

Surber parred both the first and second holes at Lake Breeze Golf Course before making a double bogey on the third. He got back on track with a par on No. 5. He didn’t record a birdie on the day, finishing with a five-over round of 41.

“When he controls his length is when he’s hitting it straight, he’s usually scoring it pretty well,” Shawano head coach Dean Kugler said.

Kobe Schreiber added a 43, the next-best score for Shawano, but recorded a seven on the par-4 first hole. He only had one other score higher than a bogey, a double on the fifth hole.

Schreiber, who played well at times last year, has become a pleasant surprise as one of the top 10 golfers in the conference.

“We didn’t expect Kobe to be coming in consistently low, which is good,” Kugler said.

Senior Josh Mueller, at the team’s top spot, shot a 44. Mueller has consistently stayed in the low 40s, and Kugler described him as the team’s anchor. Fellow senior Austin Kohl posted a 46.

Shawano, which was just 12 strokes from the lead, has stayed with the leaders in the Bay Conference, including a win on Monday at its home meet.

“I just think it’s interesting for the kids because they’re in the running, and hopefully we continue,” Kugler said. “It makes it fun for the kids.”

Menasha’s Carlos Cisneros, who shot a 36, was the medalist. West De Pere’s Jamozzy Skenadore and New London’s London Elsner finished one shot behind.

Shawano travels to the Bulldog Invitational at Shamrock Heights Golf Course in New London on Friday.
“These guys have potential to do really well,” Kugler said. “They showed that. Hopefully we can continue toward that.”
