Wildcats, Chargers take top regional seeds

Gresham and Wittenberg-Birnamwood earned top seeds in their respective WIAA baseball regionals, which open play Thursday.

The Wildcats (10-5, 10-5 Central Wisconsin Conference-10) will get the night off while STAA/Lena (1-12, 0-10 Marinette & Oconto Conference) faces Sevastopol (1-18, 0-15 Packerland Conference) Thursday. Gresham, which advanced to the sectional final a season ago, will have to win three games to get to the same level this season.

Shawano (5-15, 3-13 Bay Conference) earned the sixth seed in its Division 2 regional, earning a date with Peshtigo (10-5, 6-4 M&O) in the opening round Thursday.

The Hawks lost to top-seeded Seymour in nine innings twice this season, showing their potential to play at a high level.

Clintonville (7-10, 7-10 North Eastern Conference) is the fourth seed in the same regional and hosts Oconto Falls (6-14, 5-12 NEC) Thursday.

In Division 3, fourth-seeded Bonduel (7-7, 5-5 Central Wisconsin Conference-8) has a home game against CWC-8 foe Shiocton (2-14, 1-10 CWC-8) Thursday for the opportunity to play top-ranked St. Mary’s Catholic on May 30.

Sixth-seeded Menominee Indian (1-18, 1-15 CWC-10) will travel to third-seeded Reedsville (5-11, 4-11 Eastern Wisconsin Conference) Thursday.

Wittenberg-Birnamwood (12-3, 9-2 CWC-8) earned a bye in its Divison 3 regional, which means it will play the winner of fifth-seeded Amherst (6-8, 5-6 CWC-8) and No. 4 Iola-Scandinavia (10-5, 7-5 CWC-8) May 30.

In other Thursday games, No. 5 Tigerton (9-9, 8-9 CWC-10) opens its regional competition with a matchup against fourth-seeded Tri-County (9-8, 9-6 CWC-10), No. 6 Marion (4-13, 4-13 CWC-10) will travel to Wild Rose (11-10, 10-4 CWC-10) and No. 3 Bowler (3-11, 3-11 CWC-10), in the same regional as Gresham, plays White Lake (2-9, 1-9 Northern Lakes).
