The Shawano 10U softball team, along with the 8U baseball team, each placed third in their respective tournaments.

The Shawano 10U softball team and Shawano 8U baseball team placed third at the first of three consecutive weekends of Shawano Youth League hosted tournaments.

Games, which began Friday night after a short rainstorm swept through the area, continued as scheduled into Friday night and all day Saturday and Sunday at Memorial Park.

The Shawano 8U baseball team used an 8-6 victory over Little Chute to earn its spot among the top teams from the weekend, while the 10U softball team used victories over Waupaca and Oconto to advance into bracket play, where it defeated West De Pere in the opening round.

A loss to Plover sent the 10U team into the third-place contest, where Shawano bounced back with a 6-1 victory for third place. Winneconne defeated Plover for the 10U title.

Shawano Red, Shawano Black and Bonduel all lost in the quarterfinals of the 12U softball tournament.

With 10 teams in the 12U division, every team played two random opponents during pool play and were then seeded based on wins, runs allowed and runs scored.

Shawano Red, which earned the fifth seed in the bracket, played eventual champion New London in its opening playoff game. Shawano Black, which entered the bracket as the ninth seed, defeated Winneconne in its first game before falling to Amherst, which ended up taking third place with a 5-4 victory over Pulaski.

Bonduel, the seventh seed, defeated Ripon to make the quarterfinals, but dropped its next game to Pulaski, which finished fourth.

New London won the 12U division with a 10-4 victory over Appleton North.

In the 8U division, Bonduel dropped the championship game 12-2 to De Pere, which put them in second place.

Next weekend’s tournaments include the 8U softball, along with both the 11U and 12U baseball teams.
