John L. Martin

John L. “Dusty” Martin, 68, of Gillett, started his journey to the Spirit World early Saturday morning, Sept. 2, 2017, in Shawano.

John was born on Dec. 29, 1948, in Keshena, a son of the late Elmer Sr. and Marie (Waukechon) Martin. He attended Shawano schools, graduating from Shawano High School. He then attended the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay where he earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering. He was employed at Paper Converting in Green Bay for many years. On July 10, 1982, John was united in marriage to the former Patricia Katchenago in Keshena. Dusty eventually left the paper mill and returned to the reservation where he was employed as a police officer. He was a Golden Glove boxer for many years. He loved to fish and go to the casino.

Dusty is survived by his wife of 35 years, Patricia; his sons, Kenny Martin and Mark Martin; his daughter, Hope (Martin) Lukas; his stepson, Dana Alegria; his stepdaughters, Deena Alegria and Barbara Alegria; 20 grandchildren; five great- grandchildren; four brothers, Charlie Martin, Wendall Martin, Randall Martin and Llewellyn Martin; and his sisters, Luanne Martin and Alexis Martin.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Douglas Martin Sr., and several nephews.

Traditional Native American Services for John L. “Dusty” Martin will be held at a later date. A family dinner will be held on Thursday, Sept. 7, 2017, at 3 p.m. at the Alex Martin residence, N849 E. County Line Road, Gillett.
