3 killed in crash with wrong-way driver


Three people were killed Friday in a crash involving a wrong-way driver on state Highway 29, according state and county authorities.

Shawano County deputies and the Wisconsin State Patrol responded just before 9:30 p.m. to a report of a vehicle traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes on Highway 29 near County Road K, according to the sheriff’s department.

Shortly after it was reported, the eastbound vehicle collided with a westbound vehicle on Highway 29 near County Road T in the town of Waukechon, based on a preliminary crash investigation.

The eastbound vehicle was driven by a 38-year-old Bonduel man, who passed away from injuries he sustained in the crash.

The westbound vehicle was driven by a 34-year-old Manitowoc woman. Also in her vehicle were six other occupants; two of the occupants passed away from injuries sustained in the crash, according to the state patrol.

The state patrol, which is handling the crash investigation, reported that the deceased were a 9-year-old boy and 7-year-old girl.

The remaining occupants were transported the hospital for medical treatment and their condition is unknown. All were wearing seatbelts, according to the state patrol.

The Shawano County Sheriff’s Office is assisting the Wisconsin State Patrol with the crash investigation. Also assisting was the Bonduel Police Department, Shawano Ambulance Service, NEW 50 Ambulance Service, Shawano Fire Department,
Bonduel Fire Department and the Shawano County Highway Department.

The crash investigation is ongoing.
