Open house, wagon rides on nature center schedule

The annual fall open house and Fall Color Run/Walk are among the activities scheduled at Navarino Nature Center in October.

The open house will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. The event includes wagon rides, forestry equipment displays, historic re-enactors, children’s crafts, face painting, candle dipping and more. Guests can make scarecrows, bird feeders and rope.

The second annual Fall Color Run/Walk begins at 9 a.m. Saturday. Participants can either run or walk a 5K course through the colorful forests, fields and wetlands of the Navarino Wildlife Area. A 1-mile kids fun run will follow the run/walk. All participants will receive a T-shirt. Registration is available online at either Active.com and www.navarino.org.

Wildlife observed in previous years include ducks, geese, egrets, sandhill cranes, river otters, owls, beavers and more. Cost for the wagon ride is $6 for NNC members and $10 general public.

The nature center’s annual geocache event continues throughout October as well. Visitors can use their GPS unit to find temporary geocaches hidden in the woods of Navarino. All caches are hidden in the refuge area of the wildlife area, so as not to impact hunting on the wildlife area.
