New theater group presents ‘Christmas … On the Air’

Show set during the golden age of radio

The Phoenix Players are a newly formed community theater group in Clintonville, and the Clintonville Lions are partnering with them to sponsor their first production for the holiday season — a family friendly, humorous musical called “Christmas … On The Air.”

The show is set in the 1940s. Audiences will be transported back to the golden age of radio when musicians performed live in the studio.

In the story, Lt. Jack O’Brien is coming home from war at Christmastime to see his girl, Rosie, who’s been waiting for him for three years. She’s worried he doesn’t love her any more, but Jack is able to ease her fears … until the famous Darla Davenport makes an appearance at the radio station for the annual Christmas broadcast.

The show was written by Gregory B. Owens with a mix of original songs and classic carols guaranteed to put audiences in the holiday spirit.

“We are excited to see community theater coming back to Clintonville,” said Lions President Ralph Williams. In appreciation for their partnership, the Phoenix Players will donate a portion of the show’s proceeds to help the Lions’ community service projects.

The director and star of the show is Brandon Byng, who also directed and starred in “Nunsense, The Musical” a few years ago in Clintonville. Originally from Abrams, Byng has been involved in theater since he was 15 years old and brings more than 15 years of experience to the stage as an actor and director.

“Christmas … On The Air” will be staged in the auditorium at the Rexford-Longfellow Elementary School complex. Performances are scheduled for Dec. 1-2 and Dec. 8-9 at 7 p.m., with Sunday matinees Dec. 3 and Dec. 10 at 2 p.m. General seating tickets are $10, $5 for children age 12 and younger.
