Incumbent Shawano Mayor Jeanne Cronce and challenger Ed Whealon will face off March 20 in the only mayoral debate between the two candidates prior to the April 3 general election.

The debate — presented by The Shawano Leader, Shawano Country Chamber of Commerce, Shawano School District Community Education and Shawano Area Young Professionals (SAYPro) — will begin at 7 p.m. and conclude by 8:30 p.m. at the Shawano Community High School auditorium, 220 County Road B, Shawano. Admission is free.

SAYPro will live stream the debate via the Shawano Country Chamber of Commerce Facebook page.

Cronce and Whealon were the top two vote-getters in the Feb. 20 primary election, with Cronce garnering 443 votes to Whealon’s 379 votes. Retired businessman Jim Oberstein received 303 votes, failing to advance to the general election.

Cronce is seeking a second two-year term as Shawano’s elected chief executive following her successful campaign for the post in 2016. Whealon is mounting his first campaign for elected office following his 2014 retirement from the city’s police department. Whealon was a member of the Shawano Police Department for 34 years, serving the last 12 as the city’s top law enforcement officer.

The debate will be co-moderated by Chuck Dallas, president and founder of iConsult, Inc., a business management and tax consulting practice, and Tim Ryan, veteran Shawano Leader reporter and award-winning columnist.

The public can participate in the debate by submitting questions, in advance of the event, for consideration by the moderators in their interaction with the candidates. Questions for consideration should be submitted via email to or in person to The Shawano Leader, 1464 E. Green Bay St., Shawano.
