The Shawano School Board hopes to fill its vacant seat by November in the wake of Derek Johnson’s departure. Johnson submitted his resignation, effective Oct. 1, after taking a job in New Mexico.

The board agreed Monday to start the process and solicit applications for anyone interested in serving. Applications can be taken out at the district office located at Shawano Community High School, 220 County Road B, Shawano. The deadline for submitting applications is 4 p.m. Oct. 29.

Because Johnson was representing the city of Shawano on the board, only those residing in the city limits can apply. Whoever is named to Johnson’s seat will serve until the end of his term, which expires in April.

The board plans to do interviews — if there is more than one application — at its Nov. 5 meeting. Discussion on Monday did not include whether the board would vote to fill the seat at that meeting or schedule a vote for another time.

School district policies give the board the authority to fill any vacant seat as a group. It also has the option to allow the board president to make an appointment if no action is taken within 60 days, but the board is not exercising that option.
