Six bikes donated for Optimists’ bike rodeo

The Shawano Optimist Club plans to hold its annual Bike Rodeo Skills event Saturday at Zion Lutheran Church in Shawano. In addition to giving away free bike helmets and prizes for top competitors, six free bikes will be given away this year.

Bikers in kindergarten through sixth grade will be put through a series of skills challenges, including completing a figure eight, balancing at slow speeds, stopping on a line, weaving and coasting. The child in each category who scores the highest will receive a trophy. The overall top scorer will win a grand champion trophy.

The Shawano Police Department will perform free bike licensing, as well as free bike maintenance and safety checks. ThedaCare and other community donors are helping the Optimists to sponsor the free event.

The bike rodeo will run from 8:30-10:30 a.m. at Zion, 1254 S. Union St., Shawano. Awards will follow in the church parking lot, and recipients need not be present to win.
