Sally A. Keyes

Sally Ann Keyes, 74, passed away Saturday, June 1, 2019, in Duluth, Minnesota. She was born Aug. 11, 1944, in Tomahawk to Gordon and Mary (Henderson) Keyes. Sally grew up in Shawano, where her parents ran the Shamoco Ford dealership. She graduated from Shawano High School in 1962, then attained a Bachelor of Arts in library science from Northland College followed by an Master of Arts from the University of Wisconsin. Sally married Thomas Nezgoda in 1969 and later divorced. She married again in 1984 to Donald Griggs.

Sally had an unforgettable, vivacious personality, and though she suffered from multiple sclerosis most of her life, her tenacity to persevere was one of her greatest hallmarks. She was a lifelong volunteer, giving her time to many organizations and causes including a crisis hotline, wild animal rehabilitation, food shelters, political campaigns and most recently she delighted in volunteering for Big Top Chautauqua. She was a voracious reader, a superb typist and was devastatingly adroit at both Scrabble and Rummy 500. Sally had many pursuits over the years, but one of her best-loved was the RoadRally events she and her husband, Don, would compete in. Two memories from her youth she was fond of sharing were her attendance at the infamous Ice Bowl, and summers spent at the family cottage on Shawano Lake, where she and her brother entered into history as the first intrepid souls ever to traverse the lake on water skis.

Survivors include her daughters, Molly and Tiffany Nezgoda.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Griggs; her parents, Gordon and Mary Keyes; and her brother, Roger Keyes.

A private burial for Sally Ann Keyes will take place in Woodlawn Cemetery, Shawano. The family asks that, should friends desire, memorial contributions be made to the National MS Society.

Mickelson Funeral and Cremation Service of Shawano is assisting the family with arrangements. Please share online condolences at
