Theodore Sylvester Boyd August 13, 1940 – May 23, 2019

Theodore S. Boyd, of Rochester, Washington, passed away at the age of 78 on May 23, 2019, in Olympia, Washington. Ted was born Aug. 13, 1940, in the St. Joseph’s Hospital in Keshena. He loved his extensive family, was proud of his Indian heritage and was a lover of nature. Ted, born by his Indian name Wapanonay, was raised in Neopit by his father, the late Sylvester Theodore Boyd, and by his mother, Margaret Louise Boyd (Waubano). He attended St. Anthony’s Church’s grade school in Neopit and graduated from Shawano High School. Ted attended Marquette University, majoring in accounting, which became his life’s passion and profession. He worked for the Seminole Tribe of Florida as a comptroller until he retired in the year 2000.

Ted and his wife Henrietta met in Hollywood, Florida, and were married in Las Vegas in 1989. They traveled together to all 50 states and to 50 foreign countries, including Taiwan, Japan, Hong Kong, China, Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore; the European countries of Greece, Italy, Spain and France; the country of Morocco and several Central American, Caribbean and South American countries, once even having climbed Machu Picchu with his wife.

Ted and Henrietta moved to Rochester in 2001. He enjoyed spending time with the members from the Chehalis and other Pacific Northwest tribes. He hosted many gatherings and dinners over the years. Family and friends especially enjoyed the annual Christmas party at his Rochester home.

Ted was preceded in death by his father, Sylvester Theodore Boyd, and his mother, Margaret Louise Boyd (Waubano), brother Walden and sister Brenda.

He is survived by his loving wife, Henrietta; his daughter Tracy and grandson Chad; daughter Francine (Victor) and grandchildren Alexandra, Taylor and Brooke. He is also survived by his brothers Alfred (Jean), Jeffery, Llewellyn, Gary, Bruce and Anthony, and his sister, Joan. Ted is survived by numerous nieces and nephews, Antone, Davey Jean, Racquel, Marcus, Alisha, Tony Jr., Arrayah, Brooks, Desiree, Kay, Matt (Shawn), Brandon, Lisa, Manih, Violette, Josh, Tetan, Cherissa, Tinkum, Jesse, Taylor, Averee, Maria, Jarrad, Tim, Brock, Jason Fish, Ryan Fish and, last but not least, Frances Sackatook.

Ted was buried at the Chehalis Indian Cemetery on the Chehalis Reservation in Oakville, Washington, on May 30, 2019. A memorial celebration of a life well lived is planned in his honor at the community center in Neopit on July 27, 2019, commencing at 9 a.m. Mass will be held at 11 a.m., and a meal will be served afterward. The public is welcome.
