'Nobody wins a war. They just end.'

Jim King knew he was going to serve his country. He just wanted to do it on his own terms.

"I wanted to graduate from college before I went into service," said King, 91, who lives in Shawano.

After graduating from St. Thomas University in the Twin Cities, he joined the Marine Corps in 1942. He had degrees in chemistry, biology, mathematics and religion.

Living the Venture

Aaron Smith was a good student, but traveling the world has given him a great education in the needs of people everywhere.

After graduating from Shawano Community High School in 1999, Smith earned a degree in journalism at North Central University in Minnesota.

During the summer of 2002 some friends approached him about doing a bicycle tour for a humanitarian mission project. He declined because he had to work, but later he prayed about it.

"I felt like I needed to do it and do it for a cause," Smith said.
