The smoke belches through the chimney. The flames burn a bright orange. Art is taking place.

This week, the large anagama kiln at Mill Creek Pottery outside Gresham has been running around the clock for six days as local artist Simon Levin and a small group of similarly passionate compatriots from different parts of the country and the world have set out to accomplish a lofty goal: create 1,000 different pieces of pottery.

<p>Vehicles and laws change every year. That is why Don and Joyce Frisque have volunteered to teach the AARP Driver Safety Program. Although it is through AARP, drivers of all ages would undoubtedly learn from this course.</p><p>"Most people who take it say they learned something they didn't know before," Don said.</p><p>There are nearly 19 million drivers over 70 in the U.S.

Volunteer profile

<p>Don is a native of Chicago. After high school, he went to Loyola University, where he was in pre-med for a year. He then went into accounting with his dad and worked for an architectural firm in Chicago. He was drafted and signed with the Navy, serving for 22 1/2 years. During this time, he was a hospital corpsman, and then was trained as a physician's assistant by the time he retired.
