In the fields again

A Caroline area farmer spent time Saturday doing some preliminary spring field work. The weather may not be conducive to more work later this week, however, as a chance of rain or storms is in the forecast for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Tuesday though is expected to be pleasant and sunny with highs in the 50s.

Board to decide on pay hikes for elected officials

Shawano County supervisors Tuesday will discuss and possibly approve proposed pay increases for 2001-2002 for county elected officials. The proposed increases total at least 9 percent per official over the two-year period.

Nothing taken after gunman enters store

Shawano County Sheriff's deputies are investigating an attempted armed robbery that occurred Sunday night at the Remington Birnamwood 76 Station.

According to a sheriff's department news release, at about 11:10 p.m. they received a report of the robbery at the convenience store, which is located at 289 Maple St.

Brewers fall to Braves 2-1

MILWAUKEE (AP) The next time the Atlanta Braves take the field, John Rocker will be back in their bullpen. On Sunday, they didn't need him.

Terry Mulholland threw eight strong innings and got his first victory of the season as the Atlanta Braves beat the Milwaukee Brewers 2-1.

In their final game before Rocker returns from a two-week suspension for controversial remarks, the Braves scored two unearned runs and got an unusually solid performance from both Mulholland and their bullpen on another cold and drizzly day at County Stadium.

Racing opener washed out

SHAWANO SPEEDWAY OPENER CANCELED DUE TO RAIN

Shawano Despite cold weather and the threat of rain, over 100 race cars were on hand for the opening night of racing. Just as track packing was concluded a brief rain shower delayed the program. Once the rain stopped, the track was repacked and the first race of the 2000 season rolled onto the track.Two IMCA Stock Car and two IMCA Modified heats were run before it began to rain again, delaying the program. This time the rain didn't stop, forcing the cancelation of the racing program.

Green Bay finishes draft with 13 new players

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) After getting bigger on the first day of the NFL draft, the Green Bay Packers spent the second day getting a whole lot faster.

Speedy but undersized defensive players Na'il Diggs and Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila were prominent among the Packers' 10 selections in the fourth through the seventh rounds Sunday.

The Packers finished the second day with five defensive players, three wide receivers, one Wisconsin Badger and a good dose of draft-day optimism about their future.
