Shawano boys win fourth straight in Bay action

SHAWANO After a quick start, the Shawano boys basketball team slowed down in the second half, but hung on for a 51-43 win over Marinette in Bay Conference action Saturday night. The win was the Hawks' fourth straight in conference action.

The Hawks jumped out early behind two quick three pointers from Blake Olson to take the early lead. Shawano grabbed a 16-12 lead heading into the second period. In the second quarter they continued their offensive output with a 17-8 run to build a 33-20 lead at the half.

Boy, 14, held in death of toddler

A 14-year-old Oconto boy has been arrested in connection with the death of 2-year-old girl who died at her father's Pittsfield home last month.

Amber Erdmann died Jan. 9 from an infection that developed because of injuries sustained during a sexual assault, according to Joe Grantham, Brown County's interim medical examiner.

"The infection became systemic and caused her death," Grantham said.

Shawano couple named to promote highway safety represent drivers

Marty and Lisa Fortun are not your typical truck drivers.

And they're out to prove it.

The Shawano couple was recently awarded the trucking industry's top honor for drivers by being selected as Road Team Captains on the 2000 America\'s Road Team.

The 13-member team the American Trucking Association's panel of million-mile, accident-free, professional truck drivers will now spend the next two years representing the U.S. trucking industry and delivering its highway safety message to the motoring public.

Cost of county annex trimmed 15%

Shawano County's Ad Hoc County Annex Building Committee will forward a resolution to the county board setting a ceiling of $8 million for constructing a county annex about $2 million less than originally proposed.

The committee also agreed Thursday a $2.9 million proposal to remodel the existing courthouse should be done separately from the annex project.

The county would issue bonds for the annex project, while the remodeling would be paid for with funds accumulated in the county's jail account.

Two die in Waupaca county crashes

CLINTONVILLE Two people are dead due to separate Waupaca County traffic accidents.

In a Thursday night accident, a vehicle left a highway south of Clintonville, overturned and struck a utility pole, killing the driver, authorities said.

William S. Peters, 53, of Appleton, was killed in the accident along U.S. 45-Wisconsin 22, the Waupaca County Sheriff's Department said. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Waupaca County Coroner, Barry Tomaras.
