Cost of county annex trimmed 15%

Shawano County's Ad Hoc County Annex Building Committee will forward a resolution to the county board setting a ceiling of $8 million for constructing a county annex about $2 million less than originally proposed.

The committee also agreed Thursday a $2.9 million proposal to remodel the existing courthouse should be done separately from the annex project.

The county would issue bonds for the annex project, while the remodeling would be paid for with funds accumulated in the county's jail account.

Two die in Waupaca county crashes

CLINTONVILLE Two people are dead due to separate Waupaca County traffic accidents.

In a Thursday night accident, a vehicle left a highway south of Clintonville, overturned and struck a utility pole, killing the driver, authorities said.

William S. Peters, 53, of Appleton, was killed in the accident along U.S. 45-Wisconsin 22, the Waupaca County Sheriff's Department said. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Waupaca County Coroner, Barry Tomaras.

Brown Co. considers alternatives to sales tax

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) Brown County officials wonder whether they can help the Green Bay Packers remodel their stadium without a fund-raising sales tax.

Jack Krueger and other members of the county's Board of Supervisors who discussed the project Thursday emphasized that their reluctance to approve a tax doesn't mean they oppose the Packers' plan.

"I am not anti-Packer. My blood flows just as green-and-gold as anyone else," Krueger said.

Tough Seymour stops Hawks

The Seymour Thunder rolled Shawano on the mat Thursday, recording six pins and holding the young Hawks squad to one decision.

"We wrestled tough, but we're way too inexperienced for those guys," said Shawano wrestling coach Tim Mayer.

"They're tough," he added. "They have a really good team."

Shawano's lone score in the 61-3 meet came when Charlie Henn (135) beat Josh Lamberg, 14-10.

Rocky DeLorme of Shawano got beat in overtime by Victor Hernandez (125 ), one of the top-ranked wrestlers in the state.

Big final quarater locks up victory for Marion

A big fourth quarter propelled Marion's boys basketball team over Manawa Thurday, 76-52.

The Mustangs outscored Manawa 24-16 in the final period, including sinking 10 of 12 from the free throw line, said coach Dan Breitrick.

Justin Van Allen scored 17 points, while Brad Miller added 16 for Marion. Noah Pockat pumped in 12 and Andy Ziemer had 10.

Overall, Marion had 31 field goals, and was 14 of 17 from the line.
