Chmura says he will be released

MILWAUKEE Green Bay Packers tight end Mark Chmura, facing trial on charges he sexually assaulted his 17-year-old baby sitter, says the team has told him he will be released.

"Today I am saddened to announce that after eight wonderful seasons, my tenure with the Green Bay Packers will be over," Chmura said Saturday during a news conference at his attorney Gerald Boyle's office. His lawyers said the formal release will come Monday.

Three area athletes claimed state championships at the WIAA State track Friday in La Crosse.

Brent Reiter of Shawano earned first place in the 1600 meters Friday, Pulaski runner Heidi Genke was tops in the 300-meter low hurdles, and Jeremiah Malueg of Marion captured first place in the discus.

Judge denies motion to suppress evidence in bank robbery

A Shawano County judge has denied defense motions to suppress evidence and statements made by a former Cecil business owner who's accused of aiding a man and his son in the armed robbery of the First State Bank in Cecil on Oct. 11, 1999.

Shawano County Circuit Court Judge Earl Schmidt made the rulings Friday during a hearing for 47-year-old Darrell Tachick. Schmidt will preside over Tachick's June 27-29 jury trial on charges of party to armed robbery and felony theft in connection with the bank heist.

Man charged with assault of boy bound over for trial

A Shawano man, charged with three felonies related to the sexual assault of children, was bound over for trial Friday on one of the charges after a preliminary hearing in Shawano County Circuit Court.

Richard P. Heinrich, 62, of 609 S. Weed St., previously entered pleas of not guilty by reason of mental disease to two counts of first degree sexual assault of a six-year-old boy.

Air Force Band concert tickets going fast

The Shawano Community High School auditorium looks to be a packed house for the military band concert scheduled for later this month.

In a matter of just a few days, Shawano Leader publisher Rod Christensen reported that about 500 tickets have been given away for the United States Air Force Band of Mid-America concert Saturday, June 17.

The auditorium has a capacity of 750 people.

The Leader is sponsoring the 7 p.m. concert a free event for the public at the SCHS auditorium.
