Participation in relay for life triples

In only a year, organizers of the second annual Shawano/Menominee County American Cancer Society Indoor Relay for Life have increased participation and donations to almost triple last year's numbers.

Hawk wrestlers grounded by Truckers

CLINTONVILLE Old Bay Conference rivals returned to the mat Tuesday night in a non-conference wrestling match when Clintonville handed Shawano a 39-33 loss. After taking a 33-24 lead with three matches left, the Hawks found themselves on the losing end of all three matches on their way to the loss.

The Hawks jumped out to the early lead when Josh Theis, wrestling in the 103 pound match, won a 17-0 technical fall over Clintonville's Mitch Thiel to put the Hawks up 5-0.

Gresham keeps Tigers winless in CWS

GRESHAM The Gresham boys basketball team picked up a big win with a 49-43 victory over Tigerton keeping pace with CWS Conference front-runners Tuesday night. After falling behind at the half the Wildcats played a tough third quarter to send the Tigers home with their ninth loss in a row.

Panel seeking to cut annex costs

Members of Shawano County's Ad-Hoc County Annex Building Committee made it clear during its meeting Monday afternoon that they want to make significant changes to reduce the cost of a proposed courthouse annex/sheriff's department remodeling project.

Monday was the first meeting of the committee since last Wednesday's decision by the county board to table until at least April the proposed $12.65 million project.

S-G plans to opt out of school start date law

The Shawano-Gresham School Board will hold a public hearing in July to start the 2000-2001 school year before Sept. 1.

School districts have to hold such a hearing to opt out of the state law that requires all schools to start after Sept. 1. The public sessions can be held before July 1, but action can't be taken by the board until then or later because it marks the start of the fiscal school year.

The proposed 2000-2001 calendar created by Shawano-Gresham teachers starts the year on August 28 and ends June 7.

Packers hire Sherman

AP Sports Writer

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) Mike Sherman, the Seattle Seahawks' offensive coordinator and a former Green Bay assistant, will be hired as the new coach of the Packers, a team source told The Associated Press on Monday.

The team scheduled a news conference at 10 a.m. Tuesday.
