Increase in heating oil prices could be worse

Homeowners who heat their homes with oil already know about the jump in the price they pay for the fuel compared to one year ago.

But it could be worse. Residents in other areas of the country, including New England and Alaska, are paying even more, as much as $1.89 per gallon.

"The supply of home heating oil in our area is adequate, but the price is volatile right now," according to Pat Vogel, general manager of Mid-County Cooperative who supplies many of the homes in the area with their heating fuel.

Trio honored at annual Chamber banquet, meeting

Matty Mathison, American Marina and Geri VandeLoo were honored Thursday night at the Shawano Area Chamber of Commerce Annual Meeting and Banquet.

Mathison received the Distinguished Citizen of the Year Award, in recognition of her "positive influence on our youth and future leaders of our community," said John Gallagher, who nominated her for the award.

Hawks fall to fifth ranked Bay Port

SHAWANO The Shawano wrestling team faced a tall challenge Thursday night facing off against fifth-ranked Bay Port in Bay Conference action. The Hawks had a tough night falling 62-9 in the contest. Shawano's two wins came from Rocky DeLorme, who returned to his winning ways in the 125 pound match, and Luke Hoffman, who picked up a win in the 140 pound match.

All-state wrestlers named

The Crossface, the publication for Wisconsin wrestling, announced its selections for its 2000 All-State team with six area wrestlers receiving recognition in Division 2 and 3 on Thursday.

Three wrestlers, Rich Schmidt, Mike Bogacz and Scott Schmidt, all members of the Bonduel High School team were selected as first-team members. Honorable mention selections included Bonduel's Tim Rank, Wittenberg-Birnamwood's Brian Waldvolgel and Marion's Jeremiah Malueg.

Early antlerless deer hunts to be considered by state

MADISON - Three consecutive years of mild winters have caused the deer herd in northern Wisconsin to grow well beyond population goals. In response to a state Natural Resources Board request for recommendations on how to curb deer herd growth, wildlife biologists will recommend an early antlerless gun deer hunt similar to the Zone-T program held in the farmland regions of the state.

Key coaches are hired for Packers

New Green Bay Packers coach Mike Sherman picked an old friend and an admired foe as his offensive and defensive coordinators.

Sherman Wednesday named Kansas City Chiefs quarterbacks coach Tom Rossley the Packers' offensive coordinator and hired Denver Broncos secondary coach Ed Donatell as defensive coordinator. Like Sherman, neither Rossley nor Donatell has NFL experience in his new position.
