Girls tip off February hoop madness

The 2000 WIAA girls basketball tournament season got underway Tuesday night with eight area teams in action. The night came to an end with only four teams extending their seasons at least one more game. Shawano, Tigerton and Bowler all won games to move on to the second round of action, while Bonduel had the night off thanks to a bye into the second round.

3 released from SMC after school bus accident

Three people, none of them students, received minor injuries in a school bus accident Tuesday morning that eventually involved three other vehicles.

According to the Shawano County Sheriff's Department, a Grosskopf school bus driven by Mildred Kroening of Tilleda was stopped with its lights flashing around 7:40 a.m. to pick up a student on County A near Schmidt Road. The bus was then struck from behind by another vehicle which was driven by Judy Verstoppen of W15998 Cherry Road, Birnamwood.

Percentage of teen births declining

MADISON The percentage of teen-agers giving birth in Wisconsin has dropped to the lowest rate since 1980, continuing a seven-year decline, state figures show.

But the report Monday from the state Department of Health and Family Services also found an increase in births overall and the infant mortality rate, especially among blacks.

Girls between the ages of 15 and 19 gave birth to 6,936 babies in 1998, compared with 7,088 babies in 1997, the department said.

Boy, 17, arrested in Witt-Birn bomb threat

A 17-year-old Wittenberg-Birnamwood area youth is in the Shawano County jail after his arrest Tuesday in connection with a bomb threat made at the Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School Jan 12.

There have been three other threats at the high school in recent weeks and one at the middle school. All of the threats have disrupted classes at both schools.

County to reconsider revised annex project

Shawano County supervisors Wednesday will consider approval of a lower cost proposal for building a county annex and remodeling the courthouse.

The board previously rejected a proposal to build a nearly 74,000 square foot annex and remodel the current courthouse, at a cost estimated to run about $12.65 million. That cost did not include the additional charges for financing the bonding for the project.
