Panel recommends funding extension

The Shawano County Board's Agriculture and Extension Education Committee has recommended a six-month extension be granted for funding promised by the county for the proposed arena at the Shawano County Fairgrounds.

Representatives from the Shawano Hockey Association and the Shawano County Horse 4-H Key Committee are involved in efforts to raise an additional $500,000 for the building, which will be called the Shawano County Expo Center. They requested the extension.

Walkers put best foot forward in fight for cancer

It's called a team event to fight cancer and teams took part in big numbers Saturday for the second annual Shawano/Menominee County American Cancer Society Indoor Relay for Life.

According to Kristine Olson of the American Cancer Society, 27 teams and about 325 people participated in this year's event, which is an effort to raise money to aid in the fight against cancer.

The event raised around $35,000, said co-chair Angie Schneider of Shawano. Schneider noted the actual goal was $20,000, although she was "shooting for $40,000."

Hawks win with buzzer-beater

Darcie O'Kimosh won the game for Shawano with a last-second shot in the Hawks' 39-37 win over Ashwaubenon.

Tenth-ranked Hawks fall to Ashwaubenon

Josh Buettner was held to just 13 points in the Hawks' 51-40 upset loss to Ashwaubenon.

ASHWAUBENON The tenth-ranked Shawano boys basketball team found out Friday night that speed can be better than size in their 51-40 loss to Bay Conference foe Ashwaubenon. The much taller Hawks were outscored 11-2 in the third period which proved to be the difference.

Local semi driver dies in Vilas Co. accident

A Shawano truck driver killed in crash Wednesday will be remembered as someone who would do anything to help anybody, a family member said.

Michael Kupsky, 50, W5850 County B, Shawano, died in a Vilas County semi truck accident after his tanker's cab plunged more than 30 feet into the Manitowish River, his trailer still dangling off the bridge.

Kupsky was a semi driver for Schneider National Trucking, Green Bay, and at the time of the accident was hauling an empty Morning Glory milk tank in the Manitowish Waters area.
