Russell E. Nowak

Russell E. Nowak, 83, of Shawano, formerly of Milwaukee, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Monday morning, Feb. 8, 2016, in Shawano.

Russell was born on Nov. 6, 1932, in Milwaukee, son of the late Edward and Verna (Kaczmarek) Nowak. He attended the Milwaukee Boys Technical School in 1952. Following school, he was united in marriage to the former Violet M. Ford on Jan. 3, 1953, in Milwaukee, where they continued to live.

Russell was employed as a baker at the Wonder Bread Company for 10 years. He then worked for the Milwaukee County Transit System for nearly 30 years. Russell served in the National Guard for six years. He was an avid baseball fan and played softball in the church and city senior leagues. He had a love of woodworking and was an accomplished handyman.

Milan A. Bernarde

Milan A. Bernarde, 90, Wittenberg, died on Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2016, at Garden View CBRF, Menasha. He was born on April 6, 1925, in the town of Plover, the son of the late Frank and Adelia (Bergman) Bernarde.

On May 22, 1948, Milan was united in marriage to Alice Drews at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Wittenberg. She preceded him in death on Feb. 21, 2011.

Milan was a United States Army veteran and was honored to attend the Never Forgotten Honor Flight. The family farmed in the town of Wittenberg for many years, and Milan also worked as a mechanic. He was an avid sports fan, and enjoyed watching basketball and baseball. Milan enjoyed fishing, hunting, mowing lawn and driving his tractor.

Elmer E. Richter

Elmer E. Richter, 81, of Bonduel, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 10, 2016, in Shawano.

Elmer was born on Oct. 10, 1934, in the town of Lessor, the son of the late Elmer H. and Selma (Popp) Richter. He was united in marriage to Ruth Westerfield on Oct. 17, 1953, at St. John Lutheran Church in Pulcifer.

Elmer lived in the Bonduel area all his life. In his early years, he worked as a logger for his brother, before working at Fort Howard Paper Mill in Green Bay until his retirement.

Elmer was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Bonduel, and enjoyed fishing and hunting with his dogs.

Elmer is survived by his wife of 62 years, Ruth; three children, Daniel (Melody) Richter, of Wisconsin Dells, Keith (Peggy) Richter, of Shawano, and Pam (Greg) Rank, of Cecil; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; as well as one sister, Carol (Bob) Woldt, of Bonduel.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Earl and John.

Dwight O’Kimosh

Dwight “Lee” O’Kimosh, “Na Guesta Weed” (Sitting Eagle), 55, of Green Bay, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2016.

Lee was born on Oct. 27, 1960, in Keshena, the son of Leroy Stick and Audrey E. O’Kimosh. He was raised by the traditional and spiritual values of both the Menominee and Arikara Tribes and was proud to share and teach his culture. Lee was a master craftsman of Native American traditional art. He was the main artist who designed and constructed the Menominee Nation Eagle Staff.

Lee was a very talented bead worker, moccasin maker, porcupine quill worker, hide tanner, bustles and dancing sticks maker. He made native art work on behalf of the tribe for gifting distinguished guests, including international countries. Lee was also a champion fancy dancer and danced at the White House, the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C., the Milwaukee Indian Community School and the Milwaukee Indian Health Board.

Florence Hanns

Florence Hanns, 98, passed away on Jan. 28, 2016, after a short illness at Marquardt Manor in Watertown.

She is survived by her daughter, Nancy, two granddaughters, two great-granddaughters, four great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Florence and her husband, Howard, now deceased, owned and operated the Shawano Shoe Outlet for many years, remaining in Shawano when they retired.

Florence was cremated and will be interred in Nola Cemetery in Park Falls in May of this year.

Gunder Thompson

Gunder Earl Thompson, 81, Oconto Falls, went to his heavenly home on Monday morning, Feb. 8, 2016, surrounded by his family.

The only child of Earl and Dorothy (Bergmann) Thompson was born on April 20, 1934, in Oconto Falls, where he grew up, graduating from Oconto Falls High School with the Class of 1952.

On June 2, 1956, Gunder married Mabel Messinger at Grace Lutheran Church in Oconto Falls.

Gunder was employed at Scott Paper Co. for over 36 years before retiring in 1989. During retirement, Gunder pursued some favorite hobbies, including beekeeping, woodworking, gardening and spending time at his cottage. He also liked to drink coffee, tell stories and watch CNN. Each Christmas Eve, the ever-growing Thompson family would gather to listen to Gunder read “The Night Before Christmas.”
