Schools honored for work with low-income students

Six area schools kick-started the new school year with high marks from the state.

The state Department of Public Instruction recognized 116 elementary, middle and high schools with School of Recognition awards for their success in educating students of low-income families.

The schools included Gresham and Bowler high schools and elementary schools in Bowler, Gillett, Marion and Tigerton.

Tigerton Elementary School has won the recognition for the last three years, and Gresham and Bowler high schools for the last two.

"We are excited to see our enrollment double from last year," said part-time principal Ruben Rakow. "We have three new freshmen this year and four students who transferred."

The school's largest enrollment was 18 in 2006-07.

St. Paul Lutheran School

St. Paul Lutheran School in Bonduel was host to more than 100 early childhood educators from the North Wisconsin District on Aug. 12. The conference is held at a different school each fall and provides networking and continued education for preschool, kindergarten and first-grade teachers in the area, with speakers from across the nation.
