<p>Various types of beetles cause untold billions of dollars in damage worldwide, and Wisconsin is now carefully watching the slow march of the emerald ash borer as this iridescent beetle spreads, leaving dead ash trees in its wake.</p> <p>But some beetles are good.</p> <p>A little imported beetle from Europe eats only purple loosestrife, a tall, slender exotic plant that is threatening to choke out wetlands by preventing the growth of native plants.

Austreng comes home to Wisconsin for U.S. Amateur

Austreng comes home to Wisconsin for U.S. Amateur

Adam Austreng is heading back to Wisconsin.

Austreng, a former University of Wisconsin-Green Bay All-Horizon League golfer and a Shawano Community High School graduate, qualified for the 111th U.S. Amateur to be held Aug. 22-28 at Erin Hills Golf Course in Erin, Wis.

“Obviously I wanted to qualify for the U.S. Amateur regardless,” Austreng said. “But when I realized that it was back in Wisconsin, I wanted to even more.”

Amateur places second in water ski championships

<p>Cody Siolka of Shawano placed second in the freestyle jump competition at the Malibu Open water skiing championships in Milwaukee last week.</p> <p>&ldquo;I was one of the few amateurs there and it was exciting to be able to compete with professionals,&rdquo; Siolka said. &ldquo;It was actually international &mdash; there were people from Australia, Canada and Europe.&rdquo;</p> <p>The Malibu Open was held Friday and Saturday at Veteran&rsquo;s Park in Milwaukee.

Amateur places second in water ski championships

“I was one of the few amateurs there and it was exciting to be able to compete with professionals,” Siolka said. “It was actually international — there were people from Australia, Canada and Europe.”

The Malibu Open was held Friday and Saturday at Veteran’s Park in Milwaukee. As a stop on the professional water ski tour, the competition included the world’s top professional athletes competing for $65,000 in prize money.
