Shawano squirts continue to do well

SHAWANO The Shawano Lightning squirt hockey team had another busy weekend of thrilling action with four games over a three-day span at the Shawano outdoor ice arena Friday-Sunday. Fans were witness to some exciting moments as the squirts finished the weekend with a 2-2 record with wins over the Bay Area Devils and the DePere Redwings and losses to Brown County and Fox Valley.

On Friday, Shawano hosted the Bay Area Devils and won 5-2 with a flurry of scoring late in the third period. The Lightning jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first period when Joseph Renik scored an unassisted goal at the 11:32 mark to get Shawano on the board. Two minutes later the Devils tied the game.

The two teams would head into the second period tied at 1-1 until Shawano took a 2-1 lead with 3:06 left in the period. Jason Adams scored a goal assisted by Renik to put the Lightning ahead heading into the final period.

In the third period the Lighting found themselves in a 2-2 when the Devils scored at the 9:45 mark of the period. The two teams would remained tied until there were just under three minutes left to play. Garrett Smith found the net with an assist from Dillon Ford to put the Lightning up 3-2. With just 54 seconds left in the game Ford put Shawano up 4-2 with an unassisted goal and Smith iced the game when he scored and unassisted goal just six seconds later to give the Lightning the 5-2 win.

Early on Saturday the Lightning ran up against a very tough Brown County team and lost 7-2. Shawano fell behind early when Brown County scored their first goal at the 11:09 mark of the first period. The Lightning tied the score when Matthew Richter scored a goal assisted by Marcus Wilber at the 9:48 mark of the first period.

The two teams would stay in a 1-1 tie through most of the second period, until Brown County scored four goals in just under four minutes. Their first goal came at the 5:43 mark of the period to take a 2-1 lead. At the 2:06 mark of the second period the Lightning were down 5-1.

Shawano cut the lead to 5-2 when Ford scored an unassisted goal at the 11:53 mark of the third period, but it would not be enough to give the Lightning the win. Brown County went on to add two more third period goals to take the 7-2 win. Stout had 14 saves in goal for the Lightning.

Saturday afternoon the competition continued to be tough for the Lightning as they lost a hard-fought 3-0 game to Fox Valley. Fox Valley scored their first goal in the first period and completed their scoring run with two goals in the second period on their way to the win. Stout had 24 saves in the game for Shawano.

Sunday afternoon the Lightning turned their fortunes around in a big way beating DePere 9-2 in their final game of the weekend. Five different Shawano players scored in the game with Richter getting the hattrick with three goals in the game.

The Lightning started off slowly scoring their first goal with only 2:43 left in the first period. Ford scored the unassisted goal to put Shawano up 1-0 heading into the second period.

In the second period Richter put the Lightning up 2-0 with 7:16 left in the period with a goal assisted by Smith, but DePere battled back to cut the Shawano lead to 2-1 22 seconds later. Shawano would build a 3-1 lead when Richter scored his second goal of the game assisted by Greg Falesnik at the 2:55 mark. The two teams would find no more offense the rest of the period.

With a strong defensive effort in the works by both teams during the first two periods, the Lightning decided to pull out the offense scoring six goals in the period. But DePere would first cut the Shawano lead to 3-2 with a goal at the 11:25 point of the third period. The rest of the game belonged to the Lightning.

With 10:14 left in the game Renik scored the first of his two goals in the game assisted by Ford giving Shawano a 4-2 lead. Three minutes later Richter completed his hattrick with his third goal assisted by Smith. Shawano went on top 6-2 when Curtis Wilhelmi scored an unassisted goal at the 5:59 mark. Just 29 seconds later, Ford scored his second goal of the game assisted by Renik to put the Lightning up 7-2. Just as quickly Shawano jumped up 8-2 when Renik scored his second goal of the game assisted by Ford just 12 seconds later. Shawano scored its final goal of the game only 29 seconds later when Smith scored assisted by Sam Reynolds.

Stout had 10 saves for Shawano in the win.

Once again the Lightning will have a busy weekend Jan. 21-23 when they play five games in the three-day span. They will host DePere at 6:30 p.m. Jan 21. then they will play DePere at home Jan. 22 at 10 a.m. and Brown County at 4:30 p.m. The following day the Lightning will play at Waupaca at 9 a.m. before returning home for a 4:30 p.m. game with Mosinee. The exciting action can be seen at the Shawano outdoor hockey arena located at the corner of Smalley St. and Sunset Ave. in Shawano.
