3 Forms Of Renewable Energy

Blog

5 Nov

The Earth consists of a finite amount of resources. Human beings have been using up most of these resources over the years. The most common use of this is the implementation of fossil fuels. Fossil fuels have been used in factories for ages and are slowly disappearing from Earth. Fuels like these are limited and as such other alternatives need to be found. Continuation of the use of these limited resources may have severe long-term effects. This is where renewable energy comes in.

Renewable energy is essentially also made from the planet’s resources. These resources are not finite and can be reproduced to create energy. An example of these resources can be wave or wind energy. Many believe this is the future of energy. Renewable energy will replace traditional energy fairly soon. Below are more details regarding how this energy is utilized and its limitations.

1: Biomass

Biomass is a relatively dated renewable energy method. Before knowing how it is utilized, it is important to know what biomass is. Essentially it is organic matter that is usually supplied by wildlife or plants. Wood is an example of biomass and has been used for many tasks over the years. The energy is gathered via burning biofuels or capturing the gases that release from organic matter.

Biomass has been used for several small things. Building small houses, burning wood as fuel, and others as examples. In the production sector, biomass is responsible for many factory operations. When charting up the total energy usage, bioenergy consists of up to 5 and 10 percent. Another benefit is the carbon dioxide released into the air. Carbon dioxide by itself is not ideal but in this case, it is absorbed by nearby plants.

Biomass is a form of renewable energy yet is still underused today. There are a few reasons for this. The technology to utilize a large amount of biofuel has not been created. This makes it less than ideal for continuous energy production. Another drawback is that the waiting period is significantly long. The organic matter needed from plants can take time as plants grow slowly.

2: Wave Energy

Wave energy is deemed as a suitable and vast form of renewable energy. Estimations regarding the energy produced from waves surpass any other energy form. The energy is dependant on two factors of the ocean. The first is the temperature of the water surface and the second is the force of the waves. In the right conditions, proper machinery is installed and then collects energy.

Renewable energy is usually variable and it is hard to calculate how much energy you gain. This is not the case with wave energy as the energy produced is known beforehand. This makes wave energy more reliable to be used as a primary energy source. Arguably the best benefit of wave energy is the amount it can produce. The energy produced is calculated to be more than enough to power a country for a year.

The drawback that comes to mind is that areas without access to an ocean suffer. There will be limited ways for wave energy to reach those areas. The reason wave energy is not fully utilized is because of the impact on ocean life. The heavy machinery can cause nearby fish and plants harm too. This machinery also needs regular maintenance and can be damaged by untimely storms.

3: Wind Energy

Long areas dedicated to wind farms have been increasingly growing in number. This is because wind energy is a relatively safe form to gather renewable energy. Wind energy started off being gathered via small turbines to be used as extra energy. At present, they are also used as a primary energy source and have entire farms. These wind farms include high-powered turbines in considerable quantity. The farms are built on open windy areas or on a vast floating platform in the ocean.

Wind energy is one of the most viable renewable energy types. The credit is all due to the safety of this energy form. There are little to no drawbacks to the environment around these farms. This is the reason why wind energy is so widely used today alongside solar energy too. With the avid use of turbines, maintenance can lead to new job opportunities too.

The main drawback with wind energy is the amount of land the farms occupy. The area required needs to be of adequate size and cannot be close to a city. Building a farm near a city leads to noise pollution and creates a dense feeling. The farms have to be built far and as a result, transporting energy can have high costs. Regular maintenance also needs to be conducted and safety protocols to be followed.

Conclusion

Fossil fuels have not entirely been replaced as the primary energy as of yet. There are a few implications and problems with renewable energy sources. Fixing these problems and using them to their fullest potential will take a little more time. At present, fossil fuels being used alongside renewable energy is common. This hybrid system is capable of powering large-scale factories with robotics. Machinery such as a pick and place robotic arm can easily be powered by renewable energy. A future where renewable energy is normal is not far away.
