8 Tips for Restaurant Managers

Blog

24 Nov

Managing a restaurant can be challenging, but there are ways to make the experience more accessible. These days finding the resources you need to run your restaurant smoothly can be easily found through a quick internet search. Multiple companies supply restaurants with the necessities you may need, but if you are having difficulty finding useful resources, here are a few tips to help you get the ball rolling.

1. Make sure you have the proper commercial kitchen equipment.

It’s probably a good idea to make sure you have the correct restaurant commercial equipment. Faulty restaurant equipment can cause several problems for your establishment. Companies like Go Food Service offers a variety of restaurant equipment to help you avoid typical restaurant hazards. They supply everything you need from commercial refrigeration equipment to janitorial supplies like plumbing tools. So, be sure to take a look at their inventory.

2. Have exceptional customer service.

As a manager, you want to have excellent customer service because servers will direct most customers’ problems directly to you. It would be best to keep your calm in tense situations to give the customers a satisfying experience at your restaurant. Good customer service is a crucial factor in getting regular customers for your establishment. A friendly yet confident demeanor can take you a long way.

3. Follow waste disposal guidelines.

Waste disposal can be complicated. There are many rules on where and when to dispose of the amount of commercial waste services you collect throughout the day when running the restaurant issues that you wouldn’t usually think of arising, such as how to dispose of used cooking oil. At the end of the day, follow all necessary protocols for proper commercial waste collection when closing down the restaurant. These regulations may include instructions on how to recycle, proper locations for garbage disposal, and how to handle sewage backup problems. If you stay on top of that, you stay ahead of the game.

4. Manage finances correctly.

Managing your restaurant’s finances is probably one of the most critical tasks that a manager can have. You need to be able to budget correctly to keep everything up and running. You might want to hire a bookkeeper or a financial advisor to stay on top of finances. If you don’t have this under control, it can be all too easy for the restaurant to go under.

5. Advertising and Marketing

Advertising is an essential key to gaining customers, and that job may be up to you if your restaurant doesn’t already have a designated team to handle advertising. You may find yourself in charge of creating an advertising campaign that may include creating flyers, ads, and maybe even a commercial or two. If you aren’t well versed in this, your best bet would be to follow restaurants similar to yours on social media platforms like Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook to get a better idea of what advertising for a restaurant entails.

6. Ordering Inventory

Making sure you order the correct amount of supplies for your inventory is essential. It would be best if you consistently kept up with the supplies you need in your restaurant. You may be in charge of signing off on restocking requests. These requests could come from the kitchen and include something as simple as needing more french fries, or it could come from maintenance for things as complicated as ordering and restocking on cooking equipment.

7. Hire the right staff members.

As a manager, hiring responsibilities may fall directly to you. That means that you are in charge of the quality of employees that will work at your restaurant. Hiring the wrong person for the job can determine whether things will run smoothly or not. If you hire someone who isn’t qualified for their assignment, you could have a significant problem on your hands. You also have to make sure you hire the correct amount of employees. Being short-staffed is not just a strain on the rest of the team but causes a trickle effect to the customer and results in a poor experience and decreases the number of satisfied customers.

8. Planning for Events and Catering

It might be beneficial to include event planning and catering in your duties as a manager. Catering for events is a great way to bring in more business. To do this, you should make sure that you are equipped to handle large or small events like weddings, bar mitzvahs, birthdays, etc. If you keep your inventory up to date, scheduling events like these shouldn’t be a problem. You are responsible for preparing your staff for each event that you book.

Managing can be a lot of work, but managing a restaurant can be a rewarding experience if you go in ready to work and with your eyes open.
