Comparing the Cost and Quality of Lab-Grown Diamonds vs Natural Diamonds

Blog

27 Apr

The diamond industry has been disrupted in recent years with the introduction of lab-grown diamonds. These diamonds are created in a laboratory setting that simulates the natural process of diamond formation in the Earth’s mantle. Lab-grown diamonds have the same chemical and physical properties as natural diamonds, but they are produced under controlled conditions, making them less costly and more ethical. Many people don’t know much about the differences between the two, but it can be extremely useful to be an informed consumer. If you want to learn more, keep reading for a guide to comparing the cost and quality of lab-grown and natural diamonds.

How can you compare the cost and quality of lab-grown and natural diamonds?

For those who are unfamiliar, lab grown diamonds, as the name suggests, are created in a laboratory setting through processes such as High-Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) and Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD). These diamonds are engineered to closely mimic the physical, chemical, and optical properties of natural diamonds, making them nearly indistinguishable from their counterparts on the Earth. Natural diamonds, on the other hand, are formed under extreme heat and pressure conditions deep within the Earth’s mantle over a period of millions of years.

One of the most significant differences between lab-grown and natural diamonds is their price. Generally, lab-grown diamonds can be anywhere from 20 to 40 percent less expensive than their natural counterparts. This is because the production process for creating these diamonds is more streamlined and does not require the extensive mining operations associated with natural diamonds. Since these diamonds can be produced in a more controlled environment, the chances of inclusions and blemishes that can impact a diamond’s value are reduced.

When it comes to assessing the quality of diamonds, the industry standard is the 4Cs – carat, color, clarity, and cut. Both lab-grown and natural diamonds are evaluated based on these parameters. Thanks to the specific environment in which lab-grown stones are produced, lab-grown diamonds can achieve an impressive and sometimes superior level of quality and a colorless appearance which is considered desirable.

What are the benefits of purchasing lab-grown diamonds?

Diamonds have always been associated with luxury, elegance, and sophistication. Still, there is a dark side to the diamond industry that not many people are aware of. Conflict diamonds, also known as blood diamonds, are diamonds mined in war zones and sold to finance armed conflict against governments. Conflict diamonds fund violence, and human rights violations, and lead to the displacement of indigenous communities. This is where lab-grown diamonds come in as a better alternative, as they are free from these ethical concerns.

Mined diamonds are extracted from the earth through open-pit mining or underground mining. This process involves the use of heavy machinery, large amounts of water, and energy, and can result in habitat destruction, soil erosion, and water and air pollution. Additionally, mining can cause social issues such as displacement in countries where regulations are lax. Lab-grown diamonds, on the other hand, are produced using only a fraction of the energy input and without any of the type of environmental damage associated with mining.

Overall, consumers’ preference for lab-grown or natural diamonds depends on factors such as cost, quality, and ethics. The truth is that lab-grown diamonds offer a more affordable and environmentally friendly choice, without sacrificing brilliance or sparkle. Considering the long history of problems in the diamond mining industry, it’s no surprise that many people feel uncomfortable with making an expensive purchase that could end up funding violence or harming local communities. Ultimately, the decision lies in the hands of the buyer, who should make an informed choice based on their values and priorities.
