COVID Omicron BF.7: Symptoms, Causes and Precautions

Blog

13 Feb

The COVID-19 pandemic has become a constantly evolving battle between the mankind and coronavirus. One of the most challenging aspects of the ongoing pandemic is the emergence of various mutated strains of the coronavirus. While some strains are weaker compared to the original virus, some are far more contagious, lethal, and capable of evading vaccine and present treatment lines.

Recently found mutated strain Omicron BF.7 has been causing grave concern to researchers and doctors alike. Compared to previous variants, Omicron BF.7 is highly contagious and is known to cause more severe illness, thus leading to an increased fatality rate. Many countries have already reported its presence. An increased rate of infection would mean a higher demand for healthcare facilities and treatment. Such are the times when you realise the importance of having a health insurance policy.

About COVID Omicron BF.7 variant

The BF.7 variant is an Omicron B4.5 sub-lineage. The variant is a primary contributor to the rise in infection rates in China. Several studies have found that the BF.7 incubation period is much shorter, implying a higher transmission rate than other variants. In addition, BF.7 can reinfect people who have been COVID-19 positive previously and those who have completed vaccination programmes against coronavirus.

What causes Omicron BF.7 to spread more quickly?

The RO value indicates the contagiousness and transmissibility of a pathogen. The R0 value of Omicron BF.7 is between 10 and 18.6. It means an infected individual can infect up to 19 others around them. The BF.7 spike protein has an ‘R346T’ mutation. This mutation is notable for its ability to evade antibodies formed through vaccination or previous COVID infections.

Unvaccinated individuals, people with weakened immune systems, children, the elderly, pregnant women, and those with medical conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and kidney disease are at a higher risk of contracting this virus.

Ways to prevent Omicron BF.7 variant virus

  • Wear N-95 or disposable surgical masks. It not only helps prevent virus transmission but protects you from pollutants that cause respiratory problems.
  • Since there is no lockdown in place, following social distancing is challenging. However, you can avoid public transportation and avoid touching objects in public spaces such as staircase railings and lift buttons. Frequently use hand sanitisers.
  • Get vaccinated. Ensure that you have received the booster dose.
  • Demonstrate COVID-appropriate behaviour if you have a cough and cold or any seasonal illness. If over-the-counter medications are ineffective, consult a doctor.
  • If the symptoms match the BF.7 variant infection, seek medical attention immediately. Also, isolate yourself from your loved ones.

Symptoms of COVID Omicron BF.7 infection

The symptoms of Omicron BF.7 infection are nearly the same as for other sub-variants of this virus. The symptoms include:

  • Fever
  • Sore throat
  • Runny nose
  • Vomiting
  • Fatigue
  • Diarrhoea
  • Cough

The symptoms may differ or, more accurately, may affect other body parts of the person suffering from a critical illness or having a weak immune system.

How can health insurance help?

COVID-19 treatment can be very expensive, especially if the condition necessitates a lengthy hospital stay. Given this, the Insurance Regulatory Development Authority of India (IRDAI) has introduced two COVID-specific insurance products—Corona Rakshak and Corona Kavach. You can purchase these covers to enhance your standard health insurance policy coverage. These plans will cover:

  • Hospitalisation costs

The COVID-specific policy covers room rent, consultation fees, diagnostic fees, and ventilation charges. If you are suffering from another illness in addition to COVID, you can use your super top-up health insurance plan. The top-up health insurance provides additional protection to cover any gap between the coverage provided by the base policy and the additional amount needed.

  • Pre- and post-hospitalisation

Most COVID cases do not necessitate immediate hospitalisation. In some cases, extensive medical care is required after being discharged from the hospital. Given this, the COVID-specific policy covers pre- and post-COVID expenses for several days, usually up to 30 days.

  • Consumables

The COVID-specific policy also covers the cost of masks, PPE kits, oxygen, and other similar items needed during the treatment period.

Besides the above expenses, the COVID-specific policy covers AYUSH treatment, ICU expenses, and domiciliary treatment costs. In addition, it provides a hospital cash allowance to assist you in meeting miscellaneous expenses while you are out of work due to illness.

Final Words

COVID Omicron BF.7, a variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, is known to cause more severe COVID-19. To prevent the spread of COVID-19 and protect yourself from infection, follow hygiene measures such as wearing a mask, washing your hands frequently, and avoiding close contact with people who are sick. Also, invest in a robust health insurance plan to stay protected during such trying times.
