Diesel engines are workhorses in the transportation and industrial sectors, but they require regular maintenance to perform at their best. Neglecting diesel engine maintenance can lead to decreased fuel efficiency, increased emissions, and costly repairs.

This article will provide a comprehensive maintenance checklist that outlines seven tips for keeping your vehicle running strong.

1. Oil Changes

The oil in your engine lubricates and cools the internal components, which helps to prevent excessive wear and tear. Over time, oil can accumulate impurities such as dirt and debris that can cause harm to your engine if left unaddressed.

To keep your diesel engine running strong, changing the oil every 5,000 miles or every six months, whichever comes first, is recommended. However, this can vary depending on the make and model of your vehicle, as well as your driving habits and conditions. For tailored recommendations, it’s advisable to refer to your owner’s manual or consult with a reputable mechanic.

When performing an oil change, it’s important to use the correct type of oil for your diesel engine. Most diesel engines require high-quality, heavy-duty diesel engine oil that meets the API CJ-4 or better specification. Using the wrong type of oil can lead to poor performance, reduced fuel economy, and even engine damage.

2. Air and Fuel Filters

The air filter removes dirt, debris, and other contaminants from the engine’s air, while the fuel filter removes impurities from the diesel fuel.

In regards to diesel fuel, certain impurities can hamper the engine. Ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD) is the diesel fuel currently available for on-highway usage in the United States, with a sulfur level of 15 parts per million or less, as reported by the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

On average, for every 42-gallon (U.S.) barrel of crude oil processed by U.S. petroleum refineries, 11 to 12 gallons of diesel fuel are produced. It needs to be cleaned as, over time, both filters can become clogged. It can restrict the flow of air and fuel to the engine and cause decreased performance and fuel efficiency.

To keep it running strong, inspecting and replacing the air and fuel filters regularly is essential. The recommended interval for replacing these filters will vary depending on the make and model of your vehicle and the type of driving conditions you encounter.

3. Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF)

It is an essential component of modern diesel engine systems.

Diesel Power Products list everything to know about diesel exhaust fluid, which includes:

  • DEF is a colorless and odorless fluid comprising 67.5% deionized water and 32.5% urea injected into the exhaust system to reduce harmful emissions of nitrogen oxides.
  • Its use is required by law in most diesel engines manufactured after 2010 to meet strict emissions standards set by the EPA.
  • Proper storage, use of high-quality DEF, and regular maintenance and inspection of the DEF system are essential to ensure proper function and avoid engine damage.
  • The consumption rate of DEF varies depending on engine size, load, and driving conditions.
  • Warning systems alert the driver when the DEF tank is low or empty, and prompt refilling is necessary to avoid reduced engine performance or failure to start.

To keep it running strong, it’s essential to maintain the proper level of DEF in your vehicle. Also, according to Business Fleet, you must determine when the vehicle’s DEF was installed. In ideal circumstances, DEF has a storage life of around 12 months. It is advised to drain and replace DEF if it has been kept in the car for more than a year.

When refilling the DEF tank, it’s crucial to use high-quality DEF that meets the ISO 22241 standard. Using low-quality DEF or contaminated DEF can cause damage to your engine’s emissions system, leading to costly repairs.

4. Battery and Electrical System

The battery and electrical system are crucial components of any vehicle. A healthy battery and electrical system are essential for starting the engine and powering various electrical components, such as lights, heating, and air conditioning. Neglecting the battery and electrical system can lead to starting problems, reduced performance, and even engine damage.

To maintain a healthy battery and electrical system, it’s essential to periodically inspect the battery for signs of damage or wear. Look for corroded terminals, cracked or swollen cases, or other signs of damage. If you notice any issues with the battery, it may be time to replace it.

5. Coolant and Radiator

The coolant and radiator are critical components of the engine’s cooling system. The radiator helps to regulate the engine’s temperature by dissipating heat from the coolant. On the other hand, the coolant helps prevent the engine from overheating by absorbing heat and transferring it to the radiator for dissipation.

To keep you’re engine running strong, it’s crucial to regularly inspect and maintain the coolant and radiator. Start by checking the coolant level in the radiator and adding more if necessary. Be sure to use the manufacturer-recommended coolant type and mix it according to its specifications.

6. Ensure Regular Engine Tune-Ups

A tune-up typically involves a series of inspections and maintenance procedures to ensure the engine runs efficiently and reliably. Some vital components of an engine tune-up include fuel injectors, glow plugs, timing belts, and spark plugs.

During a tune-up, the fuel injectors are inspected and cleaned to ensure they deliver fuel to the engine efficiently. The glow plugs that help start the engine are also inspected and replaced if necessary. The timing belt, which controls the timing of the engine’s valves, is checked and replaced if it shows signs of wear.

7. Keep Your Fuel Tank Clean and Full

Keeping your fuel tank clean and full ensures your engine runs smoothly and efficiently. Over time, dirt and debris can accumulate in the fuel tank, clogging the fuel filter and injectors. Additionally, running your vehicle on a low fuel tank can cause air to get into the fuel lines, leading to starting problems and reduced performance.

To maintain a clean fuel tank, ensure using of high-quality diesel fuel that meets the manufacturer’s specifications. Also, avoid filling up at gas stations with low turnover rates, as the fuel in their tanks may be contaminated with water or other impurities.

Regular Care and Attention Are Necessary for Maintaining a Diesel Engine

According to a report by IMARC Group, in 2022, the worldwide market for diesel engines was USD 220.8 billion. Furthermore, the market will increase at an annual growth rate of 3.63% from 2023 to 2028, reaching USD 274.9 billion. It is an incredible feat as they are the core component of a vehicle. Therefore, maintaining it requires regular attention, care, and effort.

Following these seven maintenance tips can help ensure your engine runs smoothly and efficiently for years. Of course, always follow the manufacturer’s recommendations and consult a mechanic if you notice any issues.
