Dental implants can effectively restore function and appearance after tooth loss. Patients with insufficient bone in the upper jaw may require an additional procedure called a sinus lift. This procedure prepares the sinus area to support implants securely and improves the chances of a successful outcome. Understanding why this procedure is used, who might need it, and the techniques involved is key for oral surgeons and their patients.

What Is a Sinus Lift?

A sinus lift is a surgical procedure that increases the height of bone in the upper jaw, specifically in the area near the molars and premolars. Lifting the sinus membrane and adding bone graft material creates the necessary support for dental implants. This technique is often performed in one of two ways, depending on the patient’s anatomy and needs.

The lateral window approach is applied when a significant amount of bone grafting is required. A small opening is made on the side of the jawbone, allowing access to the sinus membrane. The membrane is gently lifted, and bone material is placed underneath to create additional height. A less invasive option, the transrectal or internal approach, may be used when less bone elevation is required. With this method, grafting material is added directly to the implant site.

Why Is a Sinus Lift Necessary Before Implants?

When teeth in the upper jaw are lost, the bone in this area often begins to resorb or shrink over time. This natural process can leave an insufficient bone structure to hold dental implants securely. The proximity of the maxillary sinuses to the upper jaw further complicates implant placement in cases of significant bone loss.

A sinus lift provides additional bone height and volume in cases where the existing structure cannot accommodate implants. Without adequate bone, implants may fail to bond properly or lack the stability needed for long-term success. This procedure can prevent complications by ensuring the implant has enough support to integrate effectively with the surrounding bone tissue.

Who Is a Candidate for a Sinus Lift?

Patients who have experienced bone loss in the upper jaw or have naturally shallow sinus cavities may require a sinus lift before receiving dental implants. The amount of bone remaining beneath the maxillary sinuses is one of the primary concerns when evaluating candidacy for the procedure. A comprehensive evaluation that includes imaging, such as a CBCT scan, helps assess the bone structure and identify the most suitable approach.

This procedure often benefits individuals without upper molars for an extended period. If tooth loss occurs, the bone in that area may resorb over time, leaving only minimal bone height for implants. Patients with damage to the sinus area or complications from prior surgeries might also be candidates.

To undergo this procedure, patients must meet basic health requirements. For instance, those without uncontrolled medical conditions and who are non-smokers generally have better outcomes. Any underlying issues, such as chronic sinus problems or infections, must also be addressed before surgery.

Visit an Oral Surgeon

A sinus lift is central to preparing the upper jaw for dental implants when bone volume is insufficient. Understanding the techniques, applications, and patient selection criteria is valuable for oral surgeons who are tasked with restoring function and aesthetics to their patients’ smiles. Scheduling a consultation with an experienced oral surgeon can help streamline the process. Their expertise can address potential challenges, and patients can experience a smooth path to implant placement and recovery.
