Importance Of Leadership In Social Work

Leadership

6 Oct

“People leave bad bosses, they don’t leave companies,” is the notion prevalent in the job industry. What it means is employees don’t give up on the companies rather supervisors. They part ways with the managers who make work exhaustive. It is typically due to a bad boss that a workplace has toxic vibes, forcing people to leave. As opposed to this, when people find leaders, they serve them for years, even decades.

Then the trait of leadership also varies from one field to another. We see them existing heavily in some of the professions. We can take the example of the military, rescue services, and growing and flourishing businesses. There is yet another field where leadership exists at the grass-root and is engaged with the community. It’s involved in knowing about the issues of the masses and resolving them. It relates to their livelihoods and helps them to be optimistic and productive in their lives.

One such field is social work, where leadership is essential in every task and plan. The truth is there’s no other area of profession where leadership is so direly required. But a significant question is: how do you incorporate the trait in anyone? Well, the simple answer is no one can; it exists as an innate ability. And it’s a debate in itself. Some people realize their abilities to serve people sooner, others later.

But once they do, they start to serve their communities forthwith. The process of self-realization should begin as early as possible. That’s when you notice people rising to the occasion and being in the front line to assist others. That’s where the entire concept of volunteering and assistance comes into play.

To discover whether we have the capabilities, we’ll need to participate in social work and earn academic qualification. To begin, you may enroll in a master’s in social work online and learn about the concept of community building. This strategy may enable us to start the learning process as well as earn ample professional experience. But the first guideline would be to know the importance of social work. Let’s begin.

  • Mentoring Subordinates

No social worker serving at a higher post can perform their responsibilities without displaying the traits of leadership. A dedicated social worker is a leader who looks after his team and assists them in times of need. They help their subordinates grow, learn, and prosper and become a source of guidance.

In addition to situational guidance, a leader ensures long-term mentoring of their subordinates. With their experience and skills, they know what each person in the team may be going through and how they should reach them. It is what makes them leaders and mentors toward other people working with them.

  • Community Engagement

As a leader, a social worker is well aware that they need to be involved with the community and engage them fully. Without doing so, they know they won’t understand what sort of issues they are facing. So, an excellent social worker plays the role of a guardian and makes every effort to uplift the community.

When this community building takes place on a large scale, it begins to show a visible difference. Those in such communities start to feel encouraged to share their problems and grievances or thoughts. It enables the resolution of longstanding issues in a neighborhood.

  • Always Being Resilient

A social worker can never be a good leader if they are not aware of the importance of being resilient. The truth is it is a job that tests your patience most of the time. You might find yourself engaged in situations when things don’t seem to be working out. And you may feel you are up against the wall. These scenarios require a social worker to show consistency and perseverance.

It allows them to go at lengths to helping out the communities and be of service to them. Once the community realizes your commitment, they open up to you and turn into a helping hand for you.

  • Resolving Conflicts

A social worker must have leadership skills because it enables them to resolve brewing crises in a group or community. Conflicts and disputes are an inevitable part of any community. Realizing this, a social worker with the skills makes sure the conflict does not spread and engulf the entire community. It helps keep harmony within groups and creates a sense of calm among the people. Over-time a social worker becomes the best conflict-resolver and mediator, thus gaining the essential trait.

Final Word

Social work is never an ordinary job. It involves engaging with people, comprehending their problems, and resolving them. But to do this, one must have excellent people and interpersonal skills. They will also need to have the necessary traits of compassion, patience, and perseverance. If they have a passion for the job, it will steer them through difficult times. What complements a passion further is the academic qualification and the requisite professional experience. So, if you want to become a social worker, invest in leadership skills.
