Leadership

19 Jan

Social workers have a passion for helping out needy individuals. They use this passion to help vulnerable people like seniors, children, individuals who have disabilities. Due to such a thing, social work has close ties with social justice. It is why they need to protect the rights of such individuals to provide social equality to them. Let us now take care of what social justice is in the modern world. Social justice is the belief in equal opportunities and rights for everybody despite their background or social status. However, the concept of social justice is a little bit confusing if you do not take into account every little detail about it.

NASW Code of ethics states the social work profession deals with enhancing human wellbeing and helping meet the needs of people who have fewer privileges. Due to the absence of social justice, there will be social oppression. It can manifest in the form of classism, sexism, racism, or heterosexism. A social worker or an essay writer will usually step in and take the responsibility to help out people who are suffering from these problems. Here are few reasons to help you understand the importance of social justice in social work.

It Allows the Needy to Get the Essentials of a Good Life

When talking about being fair, everyone deserves to have the basics of a good life. Essentials like access to clean water, shelter, and food are a few. In many societies worldwide, people take these three essentials for granted. Take the example of numerous food deserts across America. Although they exist, the homeless crisis continues to grow out of control in Washington and Oregon. It also applies to other countries where people do not receive the necessities. At the same time, an abundance of it is available and given to more privileged people.

In light of such an issue, people and social justice educators need to stand up for these individuals because they cannot do it. And they can only receive these essentials if social workers speak up for something that is rightfully theirs.

It Reduces Religion-based Discrimination

Religion is a crucial part of a human being. And practicing religion with freedom is always a necessity in the modern world. However, it is not the case in most societies of the world nowadays. People frown upon individuals who practice religion openly. And these people frown upon more on some specific ones than others. Also, some countries nowadays are placing laws to discourage the open practice of religion. And, some are failing to protect people when they do it.

Social justice workers want everyone to have the freedom of practicing religion openly. They want people who do such a thing to be safe and secure from protestors and haters. Social workers everywhere are fighting governments who impose such laws of banning religious practices and protecting their social rights of preaching it to others.

It Ensures All Individuals Get Quality Healthcare

High-quality healthcare is of the utmost importance, and everyone should have an entitlement to it. Healthcare is a matter of life and death. If someone does not receive healthcare facilities on time, they will experience poor overall wellbeing and sometimes death. Unfortunately, not everyone receives high-quality medical care.

Social workers strive for equality in healthcare. They improve access to medication and healthcare facilities for the needy and poor. They work with insurance companies to introduce better medical insurance plans and ones that underprivileged people can afford and get covered without any unnecessary requirements to fulfill.

Newcomers who want to join this field should consider getting an online social work masters program if they are passionate about social justice and social work. And also if they want to work in a professional setting to help the needy and oppressed. It will be a fruitful career and one that will allow them to give to the community.

It Helps with Equality in Gender

There is no doubt that gender-based discrimination is the oldest form of social injustice in the world. Women are the most oppressed gender in the entire history of humankind. And things get even worse if these women follow a specific religion or are members of an oppressed society.

Not to mention the work-based social injustice happening to women in countries that are modern and categorize themselves as first-world countries. Social justice workers continue to empower women of all races, backgrounds, and communities and make efforts to bridge the gap between genders. They are working on providing women with better jobs and corporate opportunities, allowing them to see themselves as equals to the other gender.

It Helps with Economic Equality

The gap between the poor and the rich is expanding with every passing day. Some people can afford homes worth millions of dollars, while some do not even have a roof over their heads is enough proof for the growth of this gap. Equality does not cater to making everyone rich or everyone poor.

However, it deals with providing the same facilities to the poor that the rich have. Social justice workers everywhere are trying to fix this problem. They are working to provide quality homes and everyday facilities for people who have fewer privileges in terms of money.

It Helps with Providing Better Educational Opportunities for Underprivileged Children

Quality education is crucial to ending poverty as children get an opportunity to make something of their lives. However, children subject to racial discrimination or who have disabilities do not get the same opportunities as normal kids. Social workers need to use the power of social justice and fight for such underprivileged children. After all, they also deserve a quality education just like everybody else.

These social workers are working day and night to develop schools that support equal opportunities for children. Special schools are now open for children who have mental or physical disabilities. Rest assured that these children will have a brighter future ahead of them in the upcoming years.

Conclusion

Consider a career path as a social worker if you prioritize the needs of underprivileged people more than yours. When you go for such a career path, you become an advocate of change. And change is something that the world requires nowadays. As the population increases, more underprivileged people will come into existence. They will need someone to fight for their rights. You can be that someone and help them out by protecting their rights and providing them with opportunities to live a better life.
