start planning your medical career post residency with these tips shawano leader

Your residency is one of the last steps to finishing medical school. Many of those who reach this milestone focus only on finishing it. However, it would be best if you started thinking about the future. Planning now ensures that you won’t feel lost after your residency, and you can move on to the next step. Here are some tips that should help out.

Don’t consider your residency normal

One of the big mistakes that many of those who leave their residency make are that they assume it is normal. It is understandable since residencies can last up to eight years, depending on your focus. Many residents think that the punishing hours are regular. However, in your planning, you should imagine a more relaxing pace. It all depends on what you want. For example, you can have a good 9 to 5 job if you work in an outpatient clinic. Specialist work would demand different hours, but it won’t be as bad as your residency.

Think about yourself

While it is tempting to jump into your new medical life, you should also think about yourself. A proper work-life balance is a key to success. Your residency had you working heavily. When it is over, you will have a lot of free time to catch up on various activities. Spend time once again with friends and family so that you can reconnect with them. Additionally, if you had hobbies that you stopped doing, it is the perfect time to pick them up again. The rate of burnout in the medical profession is very high, so you should do your best to avoid it.

Get some help

Now that you are planning to start your professional career in medicine, you should get all possible help. There are several individuals who you should discuss your future with. For example, you’ll need a lawyer, and you will be receiving offers during your residency. While some will be fair offers, exploiting new doctors is still common. Avoid that problem by not signing any contracts without passing them to a lawyer first. Another person that can help is a financial manager. You will soon be earning a lot of money. Knowing where to put that money is always a good idea.

Explore your options

A good post-residency move would be to work with a locum tenens company. Many people immediately jump into a position that puts them on a rigid schedule. If you want to explore things first, locum tenens gives you that flexibility. In addition, you don’t have to worry about regretting taking a position. Most locum tenens jobs last a few months, so if the experience in one field doesn’t agree with you, you can choose to avoid it in the future. More importantly, you can set your own schedule with locum tenens, ensuring you don’t experience burnout.

Final thoughts

Your residency is the last step before fully entering the medical field. It can be intimidating to face the future without a plan. The tips above should allow you to make the right decision regarding your future in the medical field.
